Pink Crumb and New Drapes

The weather here in South Dakota this Fall has been beautiful.

I did start a new quilt a pink crumb block set on point. A few shots of the progress.

How, why a new project. A trip to Goodwill and these drapes had to come home with me. I just loved them .

I have a lot of pinks in my fabric stash. Not good pink old county rose tinted fabric. Mixed in with a few good pinks they look a little better. So I came up with this to coordinate with the drapes. Not for the top quilt of the bed but for the layer on top of the sheets just sticking out of the top comforter under the pillows. The middle layer of the bed. I love a well dressed bed. Will improve my guest bedroom greatly once I get all the layers working together!!!!!

All month I've been having this diction in my head. I should start a quilt. No finish what you started first. That's a neat quilt I should make one. No finish what you started. I have a lot of blue in my stash I should make a blue quilt. No finish what you started first. I'm sure you all have the same thoughts. But Bonnie at Quiltville had this challenge and I'm reluctantly playing a long. I'm not calling it a quilt it may only be a doll quilt. I'm just sewing a few blocks, I think. So lets not call it a new quilt project. I cut out a few and only sewing them as leaders and enders.

I have the pinwheel border on one side of my quilt. Have the rest of the pinwheel blocks done just need to sew them into strips and then to the quilt. Put a final green border around the outside and this quilt will at last be done. Not a lot of progress to show for the last few weeks. Guess I've been out enjoying summer.

Snowballs and Nine patches

This is the top I hoped to get done this month. The blocks did get done and pieced together. But the border hit a bump. I didn't quite know what I wanted to do for the border. So I was laying out different fabrics to see what looked the best. I had the small squares planed already I then decided on a green border then I wasn't sure. If I stopped with this I'd have got it done. But.........I did come up with some pinwheel blocks from the cut offs from the snowball blocks. Think I'll border each pinwheel block with more green. The quilt really needed to have more of the orange in the border to make it look better. Sorry don't know how to explain it. So I guess I have some more piecing to do. At least I won't have those cut off bonus HST sitting around looking for a home.

Chain Sewing

I have been in the mood lately to just sew long chains of pieces. I started with the pieces for the quilt on the floor. Made 7 snowball blocks and 7 of the 9 patch blocks. I'm now ready to sew the blocks together for the quilt and start in on the sashing. In between I was running through pieces for the ocean waves blocks. I love the blocks. Love how they are sewing up. But it's a lot of pieces. I also have been doing some log cabin blocks and a few star blocks. I like switching back and forth. I couldn't get to sleep last night so I got up and pieced for an hour. Hope this mood lasts for a while and I get a few quilts pieced up.

Month 5 of Judy at Patchwork Times UFO challenge is over. This month my project was all of my little UFOs. I've been collecting them in a big gift bag so I would know how many there were. So at the beginning of the month I had a bag of little quilts. I

worked at it I did get a bunch done. So of the 34 projects I got these 17 done.

These 4 I sewed and machine quilted and they only need binding.

I have these 5 that I want to hand quilt. I knew I wouldn't get these done. But I did get them pieced. These will be great take along projects for summer get away weekends. I may add a border to that one yet. Looks like it needs something yet. Check out what the others got done this month at Judy's Blog.

And last I have only 8 left that need to be pieced. Not bad I'm pretty pleased

Crazy Stars

I worked on this project for a few days last week. I have a bunch of these I think you call them mile a minuet scrappy blocks. I had first planed on alternating them with squares from old jeans. But after blocking up a few decided I didn't like how heavy the jean fabric was.

I came up with these star blocks. The weird thing is matching star points with center blocks. The center blocks have old fabrics from 4-5 years ago when I made them. The star points and sashing are from my fabric stash now. With a layout plan now in place I now know how many blocks I"ll need. Just need to do a little piecing.

This is what was picked for my UFO for the month. It's the bag I've been collecting all my small quilt projects in. I counted and there are 30 different projects in the bag. I'll have to get one a day done!!! Guess the challenge is on. I started by doing some sorting. I'm starting with the items that are nearest to getting done.

Here are the first 2 completes. A cup cozy and a little quilt. Both only needed one or 2 sides of binding sewn down. An easy start. I'll try to post all the projects as I finish them.

Gray Bias String Quilt

I got one done this month. This is the UFO for April I was hoping to finish up. I had inherited a few bias tape packages from a friend what to do with them I would never use them for what they are made for. The narrow ones are really worth less to me but the wider ones may be useful. I washed them and used a few of the grey ones for the centers of some crazy string blocks. Used some other grey fabric scrapes to make a few more. And I have a quilt. Why this was a UFO for so long was.... The back had a lot of terrible wrinkles in it after quilting. ( I tried a different basting method that was a disaster) So I dug it out ripped out some quilting basted the areas and requilted and requilted till it was better not perfect but alot better. I sewed on the binding and I got it done by the end of the month.

March UFO Challenge

My UFO for Judy's challenge for the month of march was the spool quilt. My goal for each month would be to get the quilt done that month. Or at least move it to the next step, or work on it a little at least.

January--- Broken Dishes Quilt--- finished the UFO

February--- Star BOM---- made a couple blocks pieced the blocks and sashing got it ready to quilt. Hoping to quilt it by the end of the year.

March----- Spool quilt------- made the back and basted the quilt so it's ready to quilt. Afraid to start quilting because I not sure how I want to quilt it. Tomorrow I will start.

So I'm falling a little behind but, at least making some progress. Now to go dig out April's UFO.

2 more basted after a having a break. The realtor showed the house 2 days in a row. So had to pick up my mess. Was nice to have a break but now I'm back at it. I got the pattern for both these quilts from Blogs, The bottom one is freeze frame from Judy at Patchwork times. It was a quilt for an hour project from Oct 2009.

The top one is from Bonnie Hunter at Quiltville called Scrappy Bargello the pattern is here on her web site .

I did it a couple years ago Bonnie had a Bargello challenge to use up your ugly fabric. Someday I would like to do another one using pretty fabric and get the hills and valleys to go all the way across the quilt with the same fabric.

So this bring me up to 5 basted quilts not quite 2 a day I wanted but I'm still working at it.

A little Basting Challenge

Since I was going to baste the star quilt I thought I might as well make it worth it to dig out all that stuff. So I'm challenging myself to use up all the batting I have stuffed away here and there. Yes even all those pieces. I hope to do at least 2 a day. I have pieces of time through out the day and will have to push to keep making progress on the basting. So yesterday I got 2 done. The Dresden plate and the snails tail quilt. The Snails tail quilt was started at least 10 years ago and I've probably had the top done about 5 years. It's an oldie. Today so far I have one done the green one with the crazy strip sashing. I get these out after so long I can't believe how nice they are why haven't I finished these up. I report agine when I have a few more done.

I just pulled my February UFO out of my sewing machine. I got the top done and I sewed a back for it. I knew at the beginning of the month that getting it quilted this month would be to much. I am going to keep focused on it and hopefully get it quilted in March. This quilt was a BOM that Judy did in 2009. She emailed a block pattern once a week. It was a fun doing the blocks. But after I did the blocks I stuck them away I didn't want to tackle the sashing. So thanks for the pattern Judy and the challenge so I finally after 2 years got it done.

Ocean Waves

This is what I've been sewing ocean waves blocks. I decided to make all the blocks at the same time instead of one at a time. So all 36 part 1's done and I'm working on attaching them to the center square. I'm also running through a bunch of HST every chance I get. This quilt will need quite a few. I still love this quilt!!!

7 more Dear Jane blocks done. All though I think I might redo a couple of these yet. The light tan one was challenging and still not as good as I would like it but, after 3 tries it might be as good as it gets. And don't look at the light green one.

I did some project calculating. So far this year I finished 1 quilt and started 4. So I'm working on 43 quilts right now. Better then it was.

Here is my UFO for Feb I have the sashing all cut and layed out. But, The Realtors keep calling to show the house then I have to pick it all up. So progress has been slow. My hope was to finish it and get it quilted yet this month. I'm guessing this will have to carry over into March. I am determined to get it done so I have to keep picking away at it. This is my least favorite part of quilting sewing the blocks together.

For the 2nd month of Judy L's UFO challenge I have this to finish. It's a star BOM that Judy did a couple years ago. I have the blocks done. But know a few blocks aren't big enough. So I got them out laid them out and decided I didn't like a few of the fabric choices either. I was losing ground. I bit the bullet and pressed them and squared them up and only 2 were too small. And one of those was the baddest fabric choice. I cut out 3 new blocks. Just in case one gets to small.The ones on the right side are the newbies. I am using the floor for a design wall these days because our house is on the For Sale Market and a piece of batting tacked on the wall is not a selling feature. If they call to show the house I can just toss this mess into a bag.

It's done I looked back and I started this quilt in June of 2008. I'm giving it to my grand daughter for her 3rd birthday in March. I started the month with the quilt about 1/3 quilted. It's been sitting in my sewing machine at that stage since last May. And the things got busy and crazy and I just stopped sewing for the summer. Now thanks to a few good snowstorms and very cold weather I back into the groove of sewing. Hopefully I'll get a bunch more done this year. I'm off to a good start so far.

This is the first quilt from Judy's UFO challenge you can check it out at Judy's blog HERE . For February Judy picked number 10 on the list. I'm going to have to get busy to get it done by the end of the month I only have the blocks done. But it will be a good UFO to get off my list. I'll post about it latter this week.

Making Progress

First here is my goal UFO quilt for the month. I started it about 2 years ago. A few months ago I decided to give it to my one and only granddaughter. She is going to be 3 in March and is going to move to a twin bed from her toddler bed. She needs a real quilt for her bed right. I finished the quilting on this one last weekend and I have one side of the binding done. Should be right on schedule to get it done by the end of the month.

Today hubby took off to ice fish for the day so I had a free day. I basted this quilt and got it ready to quilt and started quilting it. It's a scrappy string quilt. I love to look at other peoples work space. So here's a peek at mine.

Log Cabin/ Design Wall Monday

I've been working on a log cabin quilt. I have a few more blocks done. I made one about 20 years ago and it was falling apart. From wear and using non quilt worthy fabric. I did sell it at a garage sale for 20 bucks. To my surprise. My intent was to toss it. I used it to wrap up some furniture that I was taking to my mother in laws garage sale. I was then going to dump it in the garbage. It wasn't quilted it was only tied. One of the light fabrics I used was bad where ever it was on the quilt just let open on the seams and raveled the batting was hanging out. The dark fabrics where faded and wore. It was one of my first few quilts I made and a lot of corners didn't match up. My MIL said I should sell it I said no I was embarrassed by the raggy thing. A bet was made and it was priced at 20 bucks and it sold right away. I thought it was about time to replace it. I am doing a cheat on this one. My logs are cut at 1 1/4 inch. One the last outside set of logs on each block I'm cutting 1 1/2 inches. Gives me a little insurance when I square up the blocks. Last time I had a lot of blocks that were too small. Hopefully the extra quarter inch will solve that.

New Year Reflections and Goals

I was thinking of sewing goals and stash busting goals. I'm not making any this year I have one in mind though, for the future the distant future.

It's to use that last little crumb of fabric up. Wouldn't that feel great!! I know it would never happen.

Now some people have 5 year goals and ten year goals. I think this would be about a 15 year goal. I'll reason it out for ya. I make about 10 quilts a year. I guess that I have enough fabric in my stash to make 100 quilts give or take a few depending on size. It would take me ten years to make that 1oo quilts. I have 50 quilts started. Ten a year would be another 5 years. Add together that's 15 years of sewing. If I'm lucky because you know I would have to make a few purchases sooner or later. I'm low on light colored fabric already.

Just something to think about when you're at the fabric store feeding your stash.

New Year Start a New Quilt

Hey it's a new year why not start a new quilt. I really like scrappy quilts. But I try to control the color scheme a little. This is my tub of scrap triangles. I have a lot of the green ones more then what's in the picture. They are cut off from another quilt and one of my favorite fabrics from my stash.

I found this ocean waves quilt and thought I would try a sample block and see if I liked it or not.(I like it) The books directions uses a 8'" block in the center. But to use my green triangles I needed to adjust and use a 6" center. Means I'll be sewing a few extra blocks.

I don't know if you can see in the picture the quilt has lime green triangles that form a square when the blocks are put together. I liked this I love bright green. But my quilt will have a lot of greens and the squares would get lost and not show up.

So I'm going to use this red. Although I like the squares I hope It won't look funny because on 2 side the red is out of pattern. Hope it doesn't look like a mistake. This quilt is for sure going to have that home made old antiquey look because no way are all those points going to line up and HST sometimes can get a little wonky.

I copied the directions so I don't lose them. Thought I'd show this. Don't know how everyone else keeps track of their quilt plans. After I make a few more blocks I add my own notes/hints and shortcuts Knowing it may take years to finish this quilt. And I forget.

2011 Judy's UFO Challange

Judy's UFO challange for the year sounds like fun. Check it out HERE. I need all the motivation I can get. I guess I' in. My list of 12 quilts.

1.) Spools quilt the top is done needs batting and to be quilted.

2.) Basket quilt it's all ready to be quilted I was just waiting to start the quilting on this one because I was thinking of hand quilting it instead of machine quilting but, I really don't see that happening.

3.) This quilt is called grandma's flower garden and is ready to be quilted.

4.)Grey bias tape string quilt. Needs binding on it. That's all and it would be done.

5.) Stripes quilt this one needs the binding hand sewn down. It's been like that for at least a year all finished binding sewn on just needs some hand sewing.

6.) Broken dishes it's about half quilted.

7.) Double wedding ring. I'm hand quilting this one and hope it doesn't get picked right away I have a lot of hours to put into it yet but would be great to get it done.

8.)Whirly bird it's just a flimsy right now I might just tie this one or do a combination of tying and machine quilting.

9.) No picture but the UFO number nine will be to get all the small doll quilts I've got started done.

10.) A star BOM that Judy did a while back. I've got the blocks done I was just a little confused on the sashing and not sure whaat direction to take so I haven't looked at them for awhile.

11.)Snails tail it's an old UFO.

12.)Jack's chain a real challenge quilt I would at least like to get the top pieced and ready for quilting.

Happy New Year!!!!

2011 a new year wow the last year went fast. Glad to be past it and sure hope 2011 is alot better then 2010. (there was a lot of stressful stuff for me) I have been sewing and sewing posts will be appearing again. I've gotten my sewing mojo back.

Snowbals and 9 Patches

I need to quit playing facebook games and get back to sewing. If you don't play games on facebook don't start it's way to addicting. I have to turn my addiction back to sewing so I at least have something to show for my time instead of a very nice zoo.

I have had this quilt on the design wall for a few weeks. It's a combination of about three quilts that I like. I'm working on the colors and layout. And really like what I've decided on so far.

This one 9 patches in the corner of the blocks. 9 patch blocks in the corner of the quilt.

Here is a picture of one of my inspiration quilts. I liked the small 9 patch blocks and how they blended in to the first border of small squares. I didn't like the alternate blocks or the applique border in this quilt a little to busy for me. and the applique would take me at least a year. So I used snowball blocks for alternate blocks in my quilt. I've wanted to do a snowball quilt for a while but never found a layout I've liked. Still working on a final border yet.

2009 Quilts In Review

2010 Stash Report Week 1

Here we go on another year.

This year I'm not reporting every week instead I'm going to report by the month. So I'll post my report the end of January.

My goal for last year was 150 yards I busted about 100 yards (I'm very happy with that). I really had no idea how much fabric I used or purchased in a year. So this year I'm going to set my goal at 100 yards which is about what I busted in 2009. For the last couple months I've been measuring fabric in my stash and added it all together and know how much fabric I have. I have 754 yards of quilting fabric in my stash. I still have a couple large tubs of non quilt worthy fabric to be counted yet before I get my true amount of my stash. Here's my quilt fabric stash. Folded fabric on the shelves, cut strips in 3 larges drawer units and cut squares in 3 smaller drawer units, odds and ends in 5 tubs still need to be sorted, 2 large tubs not in picture of non quilting fabric. Hopefully by the end of the year I won't have any fabric on top of the shelves and the tubs will be empty. Good luck to all the stash busters this year here we go!!!

Last stash report for the year. Guess I've been a little absent from reporting the last couple months. But I was still keeping track. So for the year

I plan to keep track again next year but only report monthly. I enjoyed keeping track the pro was I did really evaluate any purchases a lot closer and am sure would of purchased a lot more fabric if I wasn't keeping track. The con was I started a few to many quilts because they would use up more fabric then finishing the ones that were almost done. Since I counted fabric out of stash once it was cut for a quilt.
I think for this year I want to bust 50 yds report monthly, and make a bucket list of quilting goals for the year. And get my project count down to a lot better number.

This quilt has been on the bed in the guest bedroom for a month. I finally brought it out and I am going to get the binding sewn down before the end of the year. Other then that not a lot of quilting going on here. Guess you need a break from it now and then.

Week 46 guess I missed a few weeks.
For the year I'm at 61 yds busted. Far short of my goal of 150 for the year but 61 yards is pretty good for me. I did manage to do some mindless sewing and get this string quilt top done. And to use up some yardage I whipped up the backing too.

Week 40 of the stash reports I haven't purchased any new fabric. I used a little over 6 yards since I last reported. So for the year I've busted 39yds and 11".
And I have completed 9 quilts so far this year.

Design Wall Monday
I have a designs wall at last. After thinking about it for a month or so. I know it's not much but it works. I decided to put it behind the door so its out of view when you look in to the room. If hubby doesn't see it I won't have to explain it to him.

Here is the string quilt blocks I am just starting. A month ago or so I bought a bag of sewing odds and ends(fabric, thread. lace, ribbon, zippers, and bias tape pkgs). The bias tape intrigued me. I will never use them for the purpose they were meant. Some are wide and I am going to use them as the center strip for the string blocks, see the grey. (I did wash a couple pieces and they didn't shrink so I'm safe on that front.)There are about 4 shades of grey and if they run out I could do the outside blocks in navy or light blue I'll wait to see what I end up with.

And on the floor is Judy's one Hour Quilt. I'm still a couple hours behind.

I've been cleaning my stash and trying to get an amount of how much fabric I really have. I moved it to this bookshelf with the hope all the folded fabric would fit. I am over by about 80 yds Besides the folded fabric I have precut strips in the plastic drawers and precut squares in the small drawers on the shelve.

Hour a Day Quiltalong

Do you have any of these? It's the cut off edges of a quilted quilt. It's about 2 yards of fabric. What to do with this scrap......

Judy at Patchwork Times is having an hour a day quilt along. Every day she posts instructions for part of the quilt. I was thinking should I do it? Then I would look through my stash for the background fabric for the quilt. Not find any I wanted to part with and then think no I won't do it. After the fourth or fifth time I came across this lovely piece. This I would love to use up. So I am working on her quilt. The back grounds this lovely green and for the light, muslin the rest of the fabric is scrappy. I hope to catch up over the weekend.

Flying Days

Work, work, work, what can I say the days have been flying by. Our spec house sold after being on the market for 1 week. But we have to finish off the basement. So coordinating electricians, plumbers, and now making sure the drywallers and tapers don't make to big a mess of the upstairs. Yes the whole house is already covered with sawdust from the framing so a little drywall dust will just blend on in. And my main thing this week is to get a garage full of woodwork finished. So I can paint the walls next week. On the quilting front I try to get a little quilting done in the morning and maybe a half hour before I go to bed. I pulled the green nine patch out of my sewing machine last night and trimmed the edges this morning. I love this quilt I'll post about it when I get the binding on it.

And I hand stitched the last of the binding on scrap angels while I watched Biggest Loser on TV last night. Might of been the only time I
sat down yesterday and relaxed.
It has a nice cozy flannel fabric back.

Shirt Quilt

Just showing off the back first.Shirt quilt is done. I started this quilt last winter. I thought I would give sewing with second hand fabric for a quilt a try. I had been collecting shirts and started in. Cutting up the shirts is a lot more work then I thought it would be. And the fabric from one shirt to the next is not very consistent with the others. The main problem I had was one would be a lot more stretchier then what I'm used to. I love the homey homespun look of the quilt but doubt I would collect more shirts for future quilts. That said I will have to make one more to use up what I have left. A red white and blue one to use up all the red shirts I collected.

For a pattern I used a Dear Jane block H-1 Peek-a-boo if you have the book.

To stay with the thrifty theme of the quilt I used a old blanket as the batting. Machine quilted it with my sewing machine. I quilted circles in the centers of the blocks the meandering between the circles.

I used leftover pieces of shirts for the back and an orange shirt I cut up for the binding.

It's been a month since I reported on stash busted. I have been avoiding adding it up. I hit a very good quilters yard sale and made some fabric purchases. Yes almost 33 yards all wonderful very good brand name stuff that I am still drooling over. But I'm not touching it till October. I'm going to quilt up quilts this month. So my busted fabric for the year dropped down to an even 29yards busted. (and lots of turn over )

As for my September challenge....

After doing a couple blocks on this quilt I changed my mind about the quilting design. Had to think about it a few days then I ripped out a bunch of stitches and after a busy weekend gotten back to quilting. I am quilting a circles in the center of the blocks that get bigger and bigger each ring. My problem was when I reached the edges of the blocks with the circles I had to do something with the corners. I didn't like what I had done on the first 2 blocks. I decided to just do meandering quilting and fill in between the circles. I like the effect allot better. If you click on the photo I think you can see the quilting on the blocks. Hope to get this one done by tomorrow.

I just completed all the quilting on the scrap angel quilt. And the first thing I did next was grab another quilt from the tub and stick it in the machine. I had time to quilt 2 quick blocks. Tomorrow I am going to sew on the binding on scrap angels and my majestic mountains quilt that only needs binding. I guess I will be sewing binding and quilting this month.

I need to get some quilts quilted. So I pulled this already basted quilt out and started in. I would guess this quilt has been in progress since 1999 wow 10 years. I now have the center third already done. I guess my favorite part of quilt making is piecing. But what's the point of all that piecing if I never get them quilted. So I am for the month of September declaring it machine quilting month. How many can I get done? ?

My design floor has a finished top.

This top is done!! I wish I could start right in on quilting it but, all my basting pins are being used. Guess I should do some machine quilting and get a few of the basted tops done. Then I could count something as all done instead of just on to the next step. For the quilt I used scrappy lights for the back ground and scrappy for the reds/rust. For the green I used all the same fabric the alternate blocks I couldn't find a blue like in the book I liked.

Instead I thought a lighter cream would make the green blocks show more. I like the fabrics
I picked and love the finished top. And I am going to love this quilt on my bed when I get it quilted.

When ever I post about the quilt someone always asks where the pattern came from. So it's from this book. It's the 4th quilt I've made from the book. (yes it's a good book)And here is a picture of the quilt from the book.

The blue pinwheels really give it a different look then mine. But I'm a less busy person I like traditional and simple.

Ah lazy busy summer days.

Not a lot of time sewing. I have a few siblings that have migrated from Iowa to Arizona. The e-mails about which one is better get pretty deep. We have beautiful weather all summer they hide in the air conditioning out of the 90 plus degree weather. By November The weather here is chilly and they have nice weather. But today I'm thinking I'm ready for a season change. I love the cold for the holidays and in January when it's really cold I love being stuck inside so I can sew. Not complaining about the nice summer weather but I could use a few snugly warm inside sewing days.

Got the blocks all done this week. now to sew them up and add the borders. Can I get that all done by next Monday? And move on to something else.

Not a lot of progress this week. I changed out the pinwheel fabric for a little darker one. I should of went with this one from the start but I love this fabric and try to save it. I'm thinking about making a real design wall instead of letting the blocks lay on the floor for weeks. Thinking out my options yet.

I've been working on this one. Three post in a row now on this quilt. I almost have the blocks for 2 sides of the borders done. I sewed a few together to see how it looks. I like the border. For the alternate pinwheel blocks not so sure. I picked a creamy fabric that matched the flowers in the green fabric. I did one block. I like the way it looks except now looking at the picture I'm not so sure. I wanted them to be lighter then the rest of the quilt. So the other parts of the quilt stand out more not the pinwheels. I think after a good ironing and doing the rest it should look better not so washed out but, not the attention of the quilt, a quiet alternate block.

I missed last week so for the last 2 weeks I used 4 yds and 20" and the important part no new purchases so for the year I've busted 55 yds 17" out of my stash.
I've been working on the Remember Grandma quilt. Haven't decided yet on the alternating blocks so I started with the borders. Lots of sewing on them but I do think the borders will make the quilt.

I love short cut piecing but, the instructions in this book make you waste a lot of fabric. Here are the border units.

The squares are strip pieced into these units then a square is used to make the corners.

Then you cut off the waste. See the 2 triangles from cutting the square into a HST. The triangle I can throw in with the other triangle crumbs and make some thing someday. But the part with the red square. If I use it the white triangles are going to be to small to hardly show and the square won't come to a point. I think I can only salvage a 1 1/2 inch square from that piece it was a 2" square but the corner is cut off now, I am frugal with my scraps and try to use every last crumb and string. Wish the instructions didn't waste so much fabric I'm going to have 145 of these. I guess most people would just toss them.

Remembering Grandma one of the 10 quilts I started at the first of the year. What was I thinking I couldn't stop starting quilts. So here I am. I am going to stick with this one now till it's done. I have the 7 main blocks done and need to start on the pinwhell alternating blocks. (I left that typo isn't it funny)Do I want to do all the work for the pinwheels or just use squares. What color /fabric to use. I wish I had used that other green in the blocks but I didn't have it then. Wish I had made the centers more of the same colors. Does any of that make sense I don't like what I have.

Here's the book I got it out of. Kim Diehl Simple Traditions. Ok just kick myself and get out of this funk pick some fabric and sew. I love the quilt in the book. Hope my scrappy version looks as good.

Basket Weave String

Stash report day. I've missed the last few weeks but am ready to get back in.
It's been a month since I last reported. No new fabric in. And I did a little sewing but mostly I donated some fabric that I was gifted with a few years ago. Maybe a lesson there if someone gives you their ugly fabric because they will never use it you probably won't find a use for it either. So I removed and used 21 yds from my stash. So for my yearly total I'm at.....

50 yds 33" Busted

Just this morning I sewed the blocks for this string quilt. I started it around the first of the year. I love the basket weave pattern and am surprised at the effect.

And look how lucky I am this little quilt I made last year fits almost perfectly on my new table. Feels good to be almost settled in the new house not too many boxes left to unpack.

I've gotten all moved just not real organized yet. I've been trying to do a little sewing everyday it may only be 10 min. Here are some of the string blocks I've been working on I started these last winter. I always have a string project going other wise the strings just over populate. I fountained pieced these on fabric and don't think I will do it that way again. It makes the quilt heavy and this would be a quilt I would like to use every day and wash a lot I like a lighter feel to my quilts. The blocks need some kind of base to keep them from getting wonky. I've done one using phone book pages. And you tear off the paper when it's done. I liked not having that extra fabric in that one but, hated taking the time to rip off the paper. It also made a mess.

Here is one side of my new sewing room every day it looks different. I get it cleaned up and the floor clear. Then I get out another box and spread it all over and have a mess again. But hopefully I will end up with a organized space someday.

Still Here Just Busy

I'm still here just been really busy. My husband is a house builder and the house we are working on now is at that busy stage. Painting woodwork, picking out cabinets , flooring, lights, touch ups, odds and ends but the end is getting nearer. Then in the middle of that we sell the house we're living in. Yeah at last something sells. First the closing date was set for Sept 2. No problem we can finish this last house and have plenty of time to move in. It's a ranch very similar to the one we area in now. Then the buyers want to move the date. First Aug 9 then Aug 6 then July 29 and last July 24 yikes. They said the people buying their house had to have that date or the deal would fall through. Okay so we are moving in to the other finished spec house. It's a 2 story and has 4 bed rooms. What will I do with all those rooms. Let's see a real sewing room with a window not just a storage closet in the basement. I am trying to take a load over every morning then on to my other work. Today I moved over a bunch of my sewing stuff. Sigh, sigh, I would so love to have a sewing day play with my fabric set up my new sewing room. But I have way to much to do and get done. Can't wait till August I'll be moved and be caught up with work.

Blue Stars

I guess this got really wrinkled. I sewed the rest of the blocks together on Monday and then made the back. I used some of the extra blocks but still have three. I guess they will be added to the rest of the orphan blocks. As I was sewing the last little bit of the back a Realtor called. Can I show your house in 20 min she says. I say yes and spend the next 20 dashing around cleaning. The quilt got scrunched in a dresser drawer and I just took it out today to show to blog land wrinkles and all.

So for the year I've busted 29 yards. I purchased 103 yards so far this year and used a total of 132 yards. After missing the last three weeks here I am. I was gone on a wonderful relaxing vacation and have been busy doing summer things since I got back. The weather is finally warmed up and out side is a wonderful place to be.

So far this year I've busted 24yds and 29"
Losing ground the last 3 weeks I added 14yds and used only 1 yd 21".

Vacation and Basting

I'm going on vacation and should be back next weekend. Before leaving I wanted to get a couple of quilt tops basted for quilting. So yesterday I got out the quilt stretcher frame and started to pin bast quilts. How many quilts can I do with the pins that I have. More then I thought. I want to do this one first and I might smuggle it in to the camper with my sewing machine. My hubby won't notice. I think I can hide them in the couch it looks like a normal couch but the seat opens up like a trunk and holds lots of stuff.

This is the dear Jane block I enlarged. I used old used shirts for the fabric. I need to upgrade my digital camera and get a new one this one is 6 years old and the pictures I've been taking lately just haven't been the greatest. Or the basement is to dark and I don't have the flash set right. Sorry

When the cat wants to sit on a quilt you just can't win. Chase her off and she comes right back. I added a close up of this quilt. It has lots of issues put I finally got it together mistakes and all.
The camera does better with close ups.

I love the big black paper clip thinggys I bought to hold the back and batting to the boards. I makes it so much easier then pinning. Thanks.... to whose ever blog I seen them on. They even had a tutorial. I wish I could find it back to share.

Okay how could I not notice that square until I see it on a picture and the quilt top is already basted. How could I sew a solid 9 patch in there instead of a muslin and print one. That's not going to be fun fixing.
Yes that mistake is still there.
I've tried to take pictures of this quilt before and they never turn out. It really is a neat quilt. Maybe a new camera can do it.

And if you counted that's 6 basted quilts. I was hoping for 3 or 4.

And now I'm off for a week of vacation.

2009 Stash Report Week 21

An easy report for this week nothing added nothing used. This week I'm not one of the last to report on Judy 's blog. The only sewing I did this week was this morning while I had coffee. I finished the last 4 feet of binding on this quilt. Really need to start doing a little hand work every morning again.

I started this quilt at least 8 years ago. And I know it was half hand quilted last time we moved about 3 years ago. A good UFO to get done.
The back is just a solid navy blue shows off the hand quilting.

This week I added more fabric then I used. I just can't seem to hit 50 yards of busted fabric. So I went from 46yds busted to 37yds busted.

This week I added 11 yds 8" and used 2 yds 8". The only sewing I did was on the blue star blocks.

I'd show another picture of them but it would be the same as last week.

This picture came in a email.............. someone did a lot of crocheting.

Wow 19 weeks into this and I'm still into it.

So far this year I busted 46 yards. This week I used 15 yds working through some quilts I have that were almost completed. I know it's already Thursday and that was last week. Right now I'm working on these star blocks. They were with the sewing scraps and stuff I got from my Mom. I'm going to add the squares to all the blocks and then use muslin for sashing then make a back. Hope I get this done this week yet. I'm using strip piecing mostly and then trying to use up some squares also. That country blue with the pink flowers how old is that. My Mom hasn't sewed for 8 or 9 years. It will be nice to do something with these blocks.

Wonky Squares Quilt

This week I kept on track with trying to finish up tops that are almost done and adding backs for them. I layed out the blocks for this quilt and decided to make it a little bigger. I made an extra 24 blocks and added 2 borders the quilt is now a big 85x 91 inches. Should fit on my bed nice. I enjoyed sewing these blocks no patterns just sewed up pieces and strips and ended up with blocks. Didn't have to match corners or points. I started each square with a square 3 to 5 inches, then added a strip around 1 to 2 inches wide.

Then added a triangle to each side, squared them up a little then added a final border to make the squares 9 inches. I pieced a lot of the stripes to add to the scrappy look and to use up the smaller pieces that I had.

I'm using this fabric for the back.

Borders and Backs

After 2 weeks of big fabric purchases my total stash busting is looking pretty low. The end of April is 1/3 of the year and I am far behind my goal for the year. So this week I thought I would challenge myself to a week of borders and backs. I'm going to dig out the quilts I have almost done, sew up the blocks, add the borders and make up some backs. With hope I will be at 50 yards busted by Sunday so I will be right on track for the year.

First I made a back for this quilt.

I then sewed these sawtooth blocks together added a couple of borders and made a back. "That red, white and blue strip has been looking for a home for quilt awhile. Glad to get that one out of the stash.

Scrappy Mountains Majesty

After a couple of weeks of quilting and putting off quilting I have it quilted. I just love the way it turned out. I think I will dig into my stash and see how mush of these fabrics I still have and make a companion quilt same fabrics different pattern. It's for the camper and I could put 2 quilts on the bed in there.....

The pattern and directions I followed exactly from Bonnie Hunters Quiltville HERE

Now looking at her quilt mine is about the same colors she used greens and blues I used blues and browns/creams. Most of the fabric is from used clothing and a few quilt fabrics thrown in to get the right color scheme a couple ugly fabrics too. I used a few shirt pieces and some odd blue fabrics for the back.

And there was the batting deal. I had this batting and it was the same size as the quilt. I knew it would be short, but I didn't want to buy one when I had one that would almost work. So I dug into that over flowing drawer where I put all those left over batting pieces I keep almost all of them. And just added them in when I needed them. Now I need to trim it and put the binding on before we go camping.

Stash busting my my my I would really like to whittle my stash down. But things like fabrics keep coming home with me. Like this bag.

I am minding my own business on my way home and you know they built this brand new Goodwill store a few blocks from my house a nice clean well run and organized store. I have to drive by it all the time. And of course I stop now and then you never know what you can find. Stuff goes in and out of there so fast it's scary what I might be missing. I also enjoy just looking at the junk they get in. One time I stopped with my daughter and we seen some one dropping off a cat tree house thing at the drop off doors. When we checked out the person in front of us was buying the cat house. A very fast turn around. Any way this bag of fat quarters 80 of them (I counted) was marked 10 dollars. How could I not buy them. So my stash busting took another big hit this week in the wrong direction. Ouch 20 yards. But if there were 2 bags I would of bought them both.

This week I wanted to use at least 10 yds to make up for part of my purchase from last week. I made backs for 2 quilts and 4 fabric covered storage boxes. I'm trying to make all my storage in my sewing area coordinate. I had a few pink things and pink doesn't go any where else in my house so I picked pink and tan/brown color scheme for the sewing room. I've loved this brown strip that's been in my stash for a while but it isn't quilt worthy fabric it's to light weight for quilts. Goes great with the creamy eyelet fabric and I used a pink for the linings and rolled it over the tops and hot glued it for the top binding. All the fabrics I used are not suitable for quilts. No progress on the majestic mountains quilt really want to get that one finished but don't seem to want to work on it.

And I was doing so well!!! The weather has started to turn and it's been great. I haven't had time for sewing not when I can be out and about. I was hoping to finish the binding on a quilt and I didn't even get one side done. The quilt I wanted to get machine quilting I never touched. I wanted to finish Judy L's Bears in the farmhouse quilt but couldn't find my striped fabric I wanted to use on the border. My only sewing time from last week was the time I spent looking for that fabric. I found it on Sunday and sewed it up Monday Yeah some pictures of something!!!

Lost some ground on my stash busting. Ouch I had a big purchase.

This is the quilt I finished last week. It was from Kim Diehls book. I altered the quilt a little but the inspiration came from the book. I have some homespun scraps I had gotten from a garage sale and have been looking for a scrappy project to use them in. I mixed in a few flannels and really like the finished quilt. I machine quilted it on my sewing machine using swirls.

Some Organizing

This is how I've been keeping my projects organized I have more containers with projects but no room on the dresser to add them. I just don't have the shelve space to store them this way. They also do not look very neat or tidy. It's handy to have them sorted this way though. But
I've let myself get too many.

Okay I put most of the projects in grocery, plastic or zip bags. I have a few more tubs to clean out yet. I was able to put the sacks in this one larger tub. Let's call it the pig pen.(PIGS projects in grocery sacks)I thought it was really funny!! I have my pigs in the pen. And last I dug out this basket. Looks nice on the shelve instead of all different kinds of tubs. I was able to put 3 of the projects I'm piecing into it. I like sewing more then one project at a time. The plan is to work on the projects in the basket. I can scoop every thing back in the basket real quick and put it on the shelve for the realtor for a house showing. Then take the basket down and start right in sewing after the showing. Hope it works. When I finish piecing a top/project I can then add a pig/project from the pig pen and start working on it. I hope I can follow through on this for awhile.

The fabric I used was for Bears in the Farm house quilt from Judy. I have the last border to sew on yet. I did finish this flag quilt it's small 14 x 20 and one other smaller crib sized quilt this week. Didn't use any stash to finish these because the fabric was already cut. I'm afraid to set goals for the week it looks to be a busy week, plus Realtors showing the house off and on its hard to get time to really get into anything. And then knowing I might have to pick it all up right away to show the house. I'm used to leaving a project or 2 on my sewing table for weeks till it's done or I start on something else. I might have to come up with something a project basket or box to dump stuff in real quick then it's there when I'm ready to start again. I am really trying to focus on working on one project and getting it totally done instead of to a point and storing them away half done so I can start on something new.

Feathered Star Applique

I did get a quilt done this week it's my first applique quilt. Since I started my applique has really improved. I had a lot of trouble with the ruffles along the leaves so don't look so close. I also never came up with a good way to make small circles so for now I don't have them maybe someday I will add them or else I thought I could just use some buttons.

I went back and found all the pictures I have of the progress of this quilt. It is from a Kim Diehl book Simple Traditions. I like the border and think I will try to do something similar on another quilt some day.
My sewing machine area never looks this neat when I'm really sewing I usually have 2 or 3 projects I'm sewing.

This week the Realtors showed the house everyday so any sewing I did had to be picked up before the next showing. I did finish the binding on a wall hanging this week did half the quilting on another small quilt but, mostly tried to focus on getting this quilt ready for quilting. Scrappy Mountains Majesties from Bonnie Hunters web site. For this I got a mission accomplished. A problem did a rise with the batting. I didn't have batting big enough for the top this batting is the same size as the quilt so I just used it. I hope to either trim 2 to 3 inches off the border or piece in some batting as I quilt were it is going to be short. Don't tell the Quilt Police. The quilt is made out of old shirts and a few other scraps and I plan on using it on the bed in the camper if it's not perfect it's not a big deal It's going to get a lot of use.

From my stash I used some blue check homespun for the border and made a pieced backing for the Scrappy Mountains Majesties quilt.

This week ended up better then I thought. Most of the fabric I used was for the Bears in the Farm house quilt from Judy and a few string blocks that I finished up. Last week we officially put our house up for sale and listed it with our real estate agent. My husband is a spec house builder and with the market the way it is we are being cautious. The market here hasn't dropped in price but it has just slowed and some price ranges are better then others. Since the house we're living in should sell fast I guess we need to go for it. So since last Monday the 16th the house has been shown every day and an open house last weekend. Not very easy to get started on a quilt project and the mess it makes. My sewing room is so nice and neat I just seat there and can't do much, or else it will make a mess. A realtor called right after I started this post and wanted to show the house in a half hour. What What What I went thought the cleaning routine again. I have it down pretty good by now. Our Realtor said our house should sell fast. If not hopefully one of the other houses we have might sell. Till then I have a very clean well organized staged house

I have step 4 done. This is the quilt along that Judy L is doing over at Patchwork Times It's been a challenge to keep up with the group. I love looking at everyones quilts. I think there is one more step and then the quilt's done.

Birds in The Air

After a few days of I should work on that binding I got it done. This quilt has been finished since January and was sitting in the closet waiting for binding. This is my third quilt finish for the year. The original quilt was in the July/ August Issue of Fons and Porter's Love Of Quilting. I got the pattern or enough information to make one of my own. I used my EQ to make a pattern. Looking at it now I wish I had made it bigger or at least longer more of a rectangle instead of just square. I guess I liked having the layout(barn raising I think) squared up and even. I love the colors. I like reds but on the orange side. I hung it on the rocker for now, looks good there.

I've decided to really try to finish up some quilts. I new policy of working from the top down should help. Or work on the quilt that is nearest completion and get it done and stop starting new projects. Has worked already I got the Chinese checker quit done. And these 2 doll quilts.

My second finish for the year. I started this quilt about 8 years ago. My inspiration was a quilt I had seen at a quilt show.

I cut the triangle pyramid pieces out and sewed then into pyramids and then got stuck as to how to sew them up and what to do about a back ground. How to space the stars etc....

I finally picked a background and changed some of the colors and have all of these left over. Guess I'll need to come up with a project that will use them up don't want to waste any fabric.

I machine quilted it using a meandering pattern on the stars and a teardrop in the corners of the pyramid pieces of the back ground.
I love the back ground fabric I wanted something not to busy and not to plain and this piece I inherited from my mom worked out great.

I've had a busy week my DH had Laser PRK eye surgery. Lots of doctor visits and eye drops. He is finally improving today, vision is not as blurry and he can drive on his own again. I did get some sewing done in between running after him. I'm hopeful to get a few completed quilts this month. I got this one done this morning and plan on basting the next one so I can start quilting it.

I've been sewing Star blocks for the hearth and home quilt. I almost have half of the star done and all the snowball blocks done. I set a few out and can't wait to get them sewed up. It is very scrappy and all the fabric came from my stash.

Quilt Along #1 step 2

I'm doing the Quilt along with Judy. I hope I can keep up the first step was to pick your fabrics. The second step was to make 192 HST So I sewed and sewed and on Saturday I got them done. Bears in the Farmhouse is a bear claw pattern with a stripe. Can't wait to see everyone's quilts.

I can not believe I used 43 yards of fabric already this year. A little here and there is starting to add up. This week I was bad again and I started another quilt. I have this doll quilt that I threw together to practice machine quilting on before starting on a bed sized quilts. It's been in the living room on the end table and I keep thinking I like those colors and fabrics together.

Sooooooooo I started on a full sized version. And came up with this. Oh well I guess it's using stash.

Week seven already. I did a lot of sewing this week but it didn't use a lot of fabric. Only a yard that I used for borders on the civil war quilt. I have only one finish for the year so far I need to push to get some projects totally finished If I am going to get 29 quilts done this year I will have to step it up a little. I am happy with my fabric busting. I think I am right on track to make my goal for the year.

Civil War Diary Sampler

Today should be called progress day. I finished the broken dishes top. I finished the scrappy mountains top( pictures tomorrow). And as a leader ender when I was sewing up the blocks of those 2 quilts I added the borders on this one. How many days can you sew up 3 quilt tops.
I used EQ to come up with some 6 inch blocks and made this sampler similar to civil war quilts I have seen on many blogs. I had planned on buying the book but the local quilt shop was out so I just started with a few blocks with EQ. I really enjoyed making up a few blocks and using some blocks that were already on EQ. The last 3 or 4 blocks that I made I just used up left over pieces from the first few not the best blocks but they worked not all the blocks can be shinning stars. Note the one in the bottom corner that looks like a H. What was I thinking. Get this last block done???

Broken Dishes

I can not believe it. I am finally finished with this quilt. I do so so so much love it. I think I'm going to add a 2 or 3 inch border yet that will match the binding. Mostly I want to add the border because of the bias edges of the blocks. I think a border would help the edges from going wonky and stretchy when it's quilted. I had always wanted to make this pattern but it wasn't till I seen Crazy Mom's and read her instructions that I thought I could do it.

I sat in my sewing space yesterday and didn't do any thing for about 10 min. I forgot what I was working on and what I wanted to get done I had lost my place. I just fiddle with this and that looked at stuff it is nice to be home. I then started to work on piecing a couple quilt tops. This broken dish..........
I finished the blocks and I'm working on sewing up the blocks.And this one from Bonnie Hunters website Scrappy Mountains Majesties. I have about half the blocks together and have a couple blocks in fours like this. I'm really loving this quilt. Guess I'm back in the groove.

Blog Vacation.

We've been tying up lose ends making sure everything is taken care of waiting for this and that to happen or get over with . But the time is come. My husband and I are going on vacation. I'm going to hope for 2 weeks but time will see. We have a very lose itinerary planned. Drive to AZ 4 to 5 days. Spending a couple extra days somewhere in New Mexico. A couple three days with my brother and my husbands brother. Then on to my in laws. They spend the winter in Meza. They are so busy with people and events at the park where they stay Hubby and I are left to ourselves most of the time. We plan to suntan by the pool and go on day hikes in the desert and hills. Main purpose of trip get some couple alone time defrost toes it was 27 degrees below 0 Thursday, and get some vitamin D though the warm sun. So I leave you with some quilt candy till I get back.

Here is one I started. Not sure of what I'm going to do for sure yet. I have these snowball blocks.

I want to alternate them with one of the blocks on this quilt. Not sure if I want to make a lot of work out of it and do small 9 patch blocks or take easy way and do the larger blocks. I do want to do the small border with the squares. Don't care for the applique. I thought an out side border of the large 9 patch blocks. It's a work in progress and we'll see how it turns out. And what I decide.

The book both of these quilts are in.
And I also have been working on this quilt I have all of these blocks done. I'm trying to decide on colors for the alternating blocks. I think I want to do a light tan or darker cream. Something not as bold as in the picture.

Last I did some digging in my scrap triangles and just sewed up odd one pieces into broken dish squares. Then trimmed and squared them up to 2 1/2 inches and made a doll quilt. When I first started I thought this is easy it's going fast I should make a whole quilt this way. Then I sewed the squares and realised how small it was 12" x 10" and thought this is enough a quilt would take forever.

I have it done.

Last summer My brothers and I cleaned out my parents home. They have been in a nursing home for about a year they are happy and better off there then at home. My Mom did a little quilting a few years ago. Mostly taking classes with the neighbor ladies. She had 3 finished quilts and this one not yet quilted. We decided to give each of the grand daughters a quilt. And since no one else even sews I got this one to finish for my daughter. I have never made a quilt this big. The top was completed and the batting and back were all basted and ready for quilting. All I had to do was a lot of machine quilting then a lot of binding sewing but it is done. DD is so happy with it. I'm sure she will use as much as she can until years from now it falls apart.

It counts as my first finish for the year.
